Dodoma Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling as immigration policies and health requirements can change.
Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania, welcomes international visitors through various entry points, though most travelers arrive via Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport before traveling to Dodoma. Tanzania operates a relatively straightforward visa system, with most nationalities able to obtain visas on arrival or apply for electronic visas (e-Visas) in advance. The country has modernized its immigration processes in recent years, making entry more efficient for tourists, business travelers, and those visiting for other purposes. All travelers must present a valid passport with at least six months validity beyond their intended stay and at least one blank page for entry stamps. Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for travelers arriving from or transiting through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. The immigration process is generally smooth, though wait times can vary depending on flight arrivals and the number of passengers being processed simultaneously. Whether you're visiting Dodoma for government business, tourism, or other purposes, understanding the entry requirements before your trip will help ensure a hassle-free arrival. Requirements can change, so it's essential to verify current regulations with official Tanzanian government sources or your nearest Tanzanian embassy or consulate well in advance of your travel dates.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Tanzania offers multiple visa options depending on nationality and purpose of visit. Most visitors can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online for an e-Visa before travel, which is generally recommended to avoid queues at the airport.

Visa-Free Entry
Up to 90 days

Citizens of these countries can enter Tanzania without a visa for short stays

Includes
Kenya Uganda Rwanda Burundi Malawi Zambia Zimbabwe Botswana Namibia Swaziland Lesotho Mauritius Seychelles Singapore Malaysia Hong Kong (SAR passport holders) Bahamas Barbados Belize Cyprus Dominica Fiji Ghana Grenada Jamaica Saint Lucia Trinidad and Tobago

Some visa-free nationalities are limited to specific purposes (tourism/business). Always confirm current status as agreements can change. East African Community (EAC) citizens enjoy special privileges.

Electronic Visa (e-Visa)
Typically 90 days for tourist/business visas; multiple entry options available

Most nationalities including major Western countries can apply for an e-Visa online before travel

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand Ireland All EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, etc.) Japan South Korea China India Brazil Argentina Chile Mexico South Africa Israel United Arab Emirates Saudi Arabia Russia Turkey And most other nationalities not listed as visa-free
How to Apply: Apply online at eservices.immigration.go.tz at least 2 weeks before travel (though processing typically takes 5-10 business days). Upload passport bio-page, recent photo, and travel itinerary. Print approval letter to present on arrival.
Cost: USD $50 for single entry tourist/business visa; USD $100 for multiple entry visa; USD $250 for US citizens (reciprocity fee)

E-visa is strongly recommended over visa on arrival to save time. US citizens pay higher fees due to reciprocity arrangements. Payment is made online via credit/debit card. Keep electronic and printed copies of approval.

Visa on Arrival
90 days for tourist/business purposes

Most nationalities can obtain a visa upon arrival at major entry points if they haven't obtained an e-Visa

How to Apply: Available at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, and major land borders. Complete arrival card, present passport, proof of accommodation, return ticket, and payment. Cash USD preferred.
Cost: USD $50 for most nationalities; USD $100 for multiple entry; USD $250 for US citizens

Visa on arrival can involve long queues during peak times. E-visa holders have priority processing. Some nationalities may be required to obtain visa in advance from embassy - check before travel. Ensure you have exact cash amount in clean, recent USD bills (post-2006 preferred).

Embassy Visa Required
Varies by visa type

A small number of nationalities must obtain visa from Tanzanian embassy/consulate before travel

How to Apply: Contact nearest Tanzanian embassy or high commission. Submit application with passport, photos, invitation letter (if applicable), proof of funds, and required fees. Processing can take 2-4 weeks.

This typically applies to certain nationalities with specific bilateral arrangements. Check with the Tanzanian embassy in your country for current requirements.

Arrival Process

Most international travelers to Dodoma arrive via Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro airports before taking domestic flights or ground transportation to Dodoma. The entry process at these international airports is straightforward but can take 1-3 hours depending on arrival times and queue lengths.

1
Health Screening
Upon arrival, you may undergo health screening including temperature checks. Present your yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or transiting through an endemic country. Health requirements may include additional screenings based on current global health situations.
2
Immigration Control
Join the appropriate queue (e-Visa holders, visa on arrival, or EAC citizens). Present your passport, visa approval (if applicable), completed arrival card, and supporting documents. Immigration officers will verify your documents, take your photo, and may ask questions about your visit. Your passport will be stamped with entry date and permitted duration of stay.
3
Baggage Claim
Collect your checked luggage from the designated carousel. Keep your baggage claim tags until you exit the airport. Report any missing luggage immediately to your airline's desk in the baggage claim area.
4
Customs Declaration
If you have items to declare, use the red channel and complete a customs declaration form. If you have nothing to declare and are within duty-free limits, proceed through the green channel. Customs officers may conduct random inspections.
5
Exit and Onward Travel
After clearing customs, you'll enter the arrivals hall where you can arrange transportation to Dodoma. Options include domestic flights (approximately 1 hour), bus services (5-7 hours), or private car hire. Ensure you use authorized taxi services or pre-arranged transfers.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Apply for e-Visa at least 2 weeks before travel to avoid stress and airport queues. Keep both digital and printed copies of approval.
Ensure your yellow fever certificate is in order if required - this is strictly enforced and you may be denied entry or required to be vaccinated at the airport at additional cost.
Have USD cash in good condition (crisp, clean bills from 2006 or later) for visa on arrival if needed. Old, torn, or marked bills may be rejected.
Fill out your arrival card during the flight with accurate information matching your visa application and supporting documents.
Keep all important documents (passport, visa, vaccination certificate, hotel bookings) in an easily accessible folder or pouch for quick presentation.
Be polite and patient with immigration officers. Answer questions honestly and concisely. Have your story straight about your travel plans.
Take a photo of your passport information page and visa before traveling in case of loss or theft.
If traveling to Dodoma specifically for government business, have any official invitation letters readily available.
Exchange some currency before leaving the airport if you haven't already, as you'll need Tanzanian Shillings for most transactions in Dodoma.
Save important phone numbers including your accommodation and embassy contact in your phone before arrival.

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Tanzania's medical facilities, particularly outside major cities like Dar es Salaam, may be limited. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation to Nairobi or back to your home country if needed. Many hospitals require payment upfront or proof of insurance before treatment. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly based on global health situations. Check current requirements regarding COVID-19 testing, vaccination, or other emerging health concerns with official Tanzanian government sources or your airline before travel. Visit the Tanzania Ministry of Health website or contact the Tanzanian embassy for the most current information. Some requirements may vary by country of origin.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport with the same validity requirements as adults (6 months minimum). Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 1 year old if coming from endemic countries. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) authorizing the travel, including contact information and copies of parents' passport ID pages. This is particularly important for single parents, guardians, or children traveling with one parent. Immigration officials may request this documentation. For divorced parents, carry custody documentation if applicable. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and may need additional documentation from parents and receiving parties in Tanzania.

Traveling with Pets

Pets entering Tanzania require: (1) Import permit obtained in advance from Tanzania's Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development; (2) Valid health certificate issued by licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel; (3) Rabies vaccination certificate showing vaccination at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival; (4) Additional vaccinations as recommended by veterinarian; (5) Microchip identification recommended. Pets must enter through designated ports of entry and will be inspected by veterinary officials. Some airlines have restrictions on pet travel. Quarantine may be required in certain circumstances. Birds and exotic animals have additional requirements and restrictions. Plan well in advance as the permit process can take several weeks. Contact the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries or the Tanzanian embassy for current detailed requirements.

Extended Stays and Visa Extensions

Tourist and business visas are typically valid for up to 90 days. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for an extension before your current visa expires. Visit the Immigration Services Department office in Dar es Salaam or Dodoma with your passport, current visa, application form, passport photos, proof of sufficient funds, and extension fee (varies by duration). Extensions are not guaranteed and are granted at the discretion of immigration officials. Apply at least 2 weeks before expiry. Overstaying your visa can result in fines of USD $100 per day, detention, deportation, and bans on future entry. For long-term stays (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate permit or pass before or shortly after arrival. Work permits require employer sponsorship and are processed through the Labor Department. Student permits require acceptance from a recognized Tanzanian institution. Residence permits have various categories depending on circumstances (investor, retired person, etc.). These processes can take several months, so plan accordingly.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can enter on tourist/business visas for short trips involving meetings, conferences, or negotiations. However, if you will be conducting work, receiving payment from Tanzanian sources, or staying long-term, you need a work permit (Class A, B, or C depending on your role). Business visitors should carry: invitation letter from Tanzanian company/organization, business registration documents, proof of business activities, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Multiple-entry visas are available for frequent business travelers. For extended business activities, consult with the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) or immigration authorities about appropriate permits. Note that conducting business on a tourist visa when a work permit is required can result in deportation and future entry bans.

Transit Passengers

If you're transiting through Tanzania to another destination and will not leave the airport international transit area, you typically do not need a visa. However, if you wish to leave the airport or your layover exceeds a certain duration, you may need a transit visa. If you plan to leave the airport to visit Dodoma or other areas during a long layover, obtain a regular tourist visa (e-visa or on arrival). Ensure your onward ticket is confirmed and you have necessary visas for your final destination. Some nationalities may require transit visas even without leaving the airport - check with the Tanzanian embassy or your airline.

Volunteer Workers and NGO Staff

Volunteers and NGO workers planning to work in Tanzania need appropriate permits beyond tourist visas. Short-term volunteers (under 90 days) may enter on business visas with proper documentation from the sponsoring organization, but this is a gray area - consult immigration officials. Long-term volunteers and NGO staff require work permits (typically Class C) or volunteer permits, which must be arranged by the sponsoring organization in Tanzania. Required documents typically include: invitation from registered NGO, proof of NGO registration in Tanzania, detailed work plan, police clearance, medical examination, academic certificates, and passport photos. The organization should initiate the permit process before your arrival. Working without proper permits can result in deportation and bans on re-entry.

Journalists and Media Professionals

Journalists, filmmakers, and media professionals must obtain special permits before entering Tanzania for professional work. Apply for media accreditation through the Tanzania Media Council and the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. Requirements include: formal application letter, assignment letter from media organization, detailed filming/reporting plan, passport copies, and fees. Professional filming may also require permits from Tanzania Film Censorship Board and location permissions. Tourist filming (personal vacation videos) generally doesn't require permits. Processing can take several weeks, so apply well in advance. Entry on tourist visa for professional media work is illegal and can result in deportation, equipment confiscation, and future entry bans.
