Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Tanzania offers multiple visa options depending on nationality and purpose of visit. Most visitors can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online for an e-Visa before travel, which is generally recommended to avoid queues at the airport.
Citizens of these countries can enter Tanzania without a visa for short stays
Some visa-free nationalities are limited to specific purposes (tourism/business). Always confirm current status as agreements can change. East African Community (EAC) citizens enjoy special privileges.
Most nationalities including major Western countries can apply for an e-Visa online before travel
Cost: USD $50 for single entry tourist/business visa; USD $100 for multiple entry visa; USD $250 for US citizens (reciprocity fee)
E-visa is strongly recommended over visa on arrival to save time. US citizens pay higher fees due to reciprocity arrangements. Payment is made online via credit/debit card. Keep electronic and printed copies of approval.
Most nationalities can obtain a visa upon arrival at major entry points if they haven't obtained an e-Visa
Cost: USD $50 for most nationalities; USD $100 for multiple entry; USD $250 for US citizens
Visa on arrival can involve long queues during peak times. E-visa holders have priority processing. Some nationalities may be required to obtain visa in advance from embassy - check before travel. Ensure you have exact cash amount in clean, recent USD bills (post-2006 preferred).
A small number of nationalities must obtain visa from Tanzanian embassy/consulate before travel
This typically applies to certain nationalities with specific bilateral arrangements. Check with the Tanzanian embassy in your country for current requirements.
Arrival Process
Most international travelers to Dodoma arrive via Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro airports before taking domestic flights or ground transportation to Dodoma. The entry process at these international airports is straightforward but can take 1-3 hours depending on arrival times and queue lengths.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Tanzania customs regulations are designed to prevent illegal imports while allowing reasonable personal items for travelers. Customs officers conduct both random and targeted inspections. Declare all required items honestly to avoid penalties, which can include fines, confiscation, or prosecution.
Prohibited Items
- Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances - strictly illegal with severe penalties including long prison sentences
- Firearms and ammunition - without proper permits and licenses obtained in advance
- Explosives and fireworks - of any kind
- Counterfeit currency and goods - including fake designer items
- Pornographic materials - in any format
- Ivory and products made from endangered species - Tanzania has strict wildlife protection laws
- Plastic bags - Tanzania banned single-use plastic carrier bags in 2019; do not bring plastic shopping bags
- Used clothing for commercial purposes - requires special permits
- Hazardous materials - including certain chemicals and radioactive substances
- Counterfeit medicines - only bring legitimate, prescribed medications
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - bring in original containers with prescriptions or doctor's letter, especially for controlled substances. Carry only reasonable quantities for personal use during your stay.
- Professional equipment - cameras, drones, and professional video equipment may require permits or payment of temporary import bond. Declare all professional gear.
- Drones - require special permits from Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA). Recreational drone use is heavily restricted.
- Plants and plant products - require phytosanitary certificates. Agricultural products may be confiscated.
- Animal products - including meat, dairy, and honey require veterinary certificates. Often prohibited to prevent disease transmission.
- Live animals - require import permits, health certificates, and compliance with CITES regulations if applicable.
- Telecommunications equipment - satellite phones and certain radio equipment require permits from Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority.
- Cultural artifacts and antiques - export of Tanzanian cultural property is restricted; obtain proper documentation if purchasing such items to take home.
Health Requirements
Tanzania has specific health requirements for entry to protect public health. These requirements are strictly enforced at all points of entry.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Required for all travelers aged 1 year and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country with yellow fever risk. The vaccination must be given at least 10 days before arrival. Carry your International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Card). This is strictly enforced.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers as food and water contamination can occur
- Typhoid - Recommended, especially if visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or eating outside major hotels/restaurants
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for most travelers, especially if you might have medical procedures or intimate contact
- Rabies - Consider for travelers with extensive outdoor activities, working with animals, or in areas with limited medical care
- Meningococcal meningitis - Recommended during dry season (June-October) or if visiting during outbreaks
- Cholera - Generally not recommended for most tourists but consider if working in refugee settings or areas with outbreaks
- Polio - Ensure routine vaccination is up to date
- Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccination is up to date
- Tetanus-Diphtheria - Ensure routine vaccination is up to date
Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Tanzania's medical facilities, particularly outside major cities like Dar es Salaam, may be limited. Ensure your insurance covers medical evacuation to Nairobi or back to your home country if needed. Many hospitals require payment upfront or proof of insurance before treatment. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport with the same validity requirements as adults (6 months minimum). Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 1 year old if coming from endemic countries. Children under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) authorizing the travel, including contact information and copies of parents' passport ID pages. This is particularly important for single parents, guardians, or children traveling with one parent. Immigration officials may request this documentation. For divorced parents, carry custody documentation if applicable. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and may need additional documentation from parents and receiving parties in Tanzania.
Pets entering Tanzania require: (1) Import permit obtained in advance from Tanzania's Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development; (2) Valid health certificate issued by licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel; (3) Rabies vaccination certificate showing vaccination at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival; (4) Additional vaccinations as recommended by veterinarian; (5) Microchip identification recommended. Pets must enter through designated ports of entry and will be inspected by veterinary officials. Some airlines have restrictions on pet travel. Quarantine may be required in certain circumstances. Birds and exotic animals have additional requirements and restrictions. Plan well in advance as the permit process can take several weeks. Contact the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries or the Tanzanian embassy for current detailed requirements.
Tourist and business visas are typically valid for up to 90 days. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for an extension before your current visa expires. Visit the Immigration Services Department office in Dar es Salaam or Dodoma with your passport, current visa, application form, passport photos, proof of sufficient funds, and extension fee (varies by duration). Extensions are not guaranteed and are granted at the discretion of immigration officials. Apply at least 2 weeks before expiry. Overstaying your visa can result in fines of USD $100 per day, detention, deportation, and bans on future entry. For long-term stays (work, study, residence), you must apply for the appropriate permit or pass before or shortly after arrival. Work permits require employer sponsorship and are processed through the Labor Department. Student permits require acceptance from a recognized Tanzanian institution. Residence permits have various categories depending on circumstances (investor, retired person, etc.). These processes can take several months, so plan accordingly.
Business visitors can enter on tourist/business visas for short trips involving meetings, conferences, or negotiations. However, if you will be conducting work, receiving payment from Tanzanian sources, or staying long-term, you need a work permit (Class A, B, or C depending on your role). Business visitors should carry: invitation letter from Tanzanian company/organization, business registration documents, proof of business activities, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Multiple-entry visas are available for frequent business travelers. For extended business activities, consult with the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) or immigration authorities about appropriate permits. Note that conducting business on a tourist visa when a work permit is required can result in deportation and future entry bans.
If you're transiting through Tanzania to another destination and will not leave the airport international transit area, you typically do not need a visa. However, if you wish to leave the airport or your layover exceeds a certain duration, you may need a transit visa. If you plan to leave the airport to visit Dodoma or other areas during a long layover, obtain a regular tourist visa (e-visa or on arrival). Ensure your onward ticket is confirmed and you have necessary visas for your final destination. Some nationalities may require transit visas even without leaving the airport - check with the Tanzanian embassy or your airline.
Volunteers and NGO workers planning to work in Tanzania need appropriate permits beyond tourist visas. Short-term volunteers (under 90 days) may enter on business visas with proper documentation from the sponsoring organization, but this is a gray area - consult immigration officials. Long-term volunteers and NGO staff require work permits (typically Class C) or volunteer permits, which must be arranged by the sponsoring organization in Tanzania. Required documents typically include: invitation from registered NGO, proof of NGO registration in Tanzania, detailed work plan, police clearance, medical examination, academic certificates, and passport photos. The organization should initiate the permit process before your arrival. Working without proper permits can result in deportation and bans on re-entry.
Journalists, filmmakers, and media professionals must obtain special permits before entering Tanzania for professional work. Apply for media accreditation through the Tanzania Media Council and the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. Requirements include: formal application letter, assignment letter from media organization, detailed filming/reporting plan, passport copies, and fees. Professional filming may also require permits from Tanzania Film Censorship Board and location permissions. Tourist filming (personal vacation videos) generally doesn't require permits. Processing can take several weeks, so apply well in advance. Entry on tourist visa for professional media work is illegal and can result in deportation, equipment confiscation, and future entry bans.
